Job Summary: The Director at Semicolon Books is responsible for providing visionary leadership and strategic direction to the organization, with a focus on promoting literacy, supporting the community, and ensuring the financial sustainability of the nonprofit bookseller. This role involves working directly with the brand founder, managing staff, engaging with stakeholders, and overseeing all aspects of the bookstore's operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Strategic Leadership:

    • Develop and articulate a clear vision and strategic plan for the nonprofit bookseller in alignment with its mission and values.

    • Lead and inspire a dedicated team to achieve organizational goals and objectives.

    • Continuously assess and adapt strategies to address evolving community needs and book industry trends.

  2. Financial Sustainability:

    • Oversee the financial health of the organization, including budget development and fiscal management.

    • Identify and pursue diverse revenue streams, such as book sales, fundraising, grants, and partnerships, to support the nonprofit's mission.

    • Ensure sound financial practices and reporting to the board of directors.

  3. Community Engagement:

    • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with the local Chicago community, customers, donors, and stakeholders.

    • Foster a sense of community through bookstore events, author readings, book clubs, and other initiatives.

    • Collaborate with local organizations and schools to promote literacy and engage with the community.

  4. Inventory Management:

    • Oversee the selection, procurement, and merchandising of books and related products.

    • Implement pricing and inventory strategies to maximize revenue and customer satisfaction.

    • Ensure efficient inventory management practices, including stock rotation and restocking.

  5. Staff Management:

    • Recruit, mentor, and motivate a diverse team of employees, volunteers, and interns.

    • Provide leadership and professional development opportunities to staff.

    • Foster a positive and inclusive work environment.

  6. Marketing and Outreach:

    • Develop and implement marketing strategies to promote the bookstore's mission, events, and programs.

    • Maintain an active online and social media presence to engage with the community and book enthusiasts.

    • Collaborate with local media to increase the nonprofit's visibility.

  7. Compliance and Reporting:

    • Ensure compliance with nonprofit regulations and legal requirements.

    • Prepare regular reports on the bookstore's performance for the board of directors.

    • Maintain accurate records and documentation.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, nonprofit management, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).

  • Proven leadership experience in nonprofit management or a similar role.

  • Strong strategic planning and decision-making skills.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Knowledge of the book industry and a passion for literature and reading.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.

  • Proficiency in financial management and budgeting.

The Director plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of Semicolon programming in Chicago and beyond, advancing its mission, and ensuring its continued success in promoting literacy and community engagement.
